Cyclists Ride 500+ Miles in 25th Annual STIHL Tour des Trees to Fund Tree Research and Education

Tree research and education essential to healthy and viable urban canopy

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — From July 30-Aug.5, cyclists and tree enthusiasts will pedal more than 500 miles through Maryland, Virginia and our nation’s capital as a part of the 25th annual STIHL Tour des Trees, a weeklong community engagement event and cycling fundraiser to benefit TREE Fund. With support from TREE Fund, researchers and organizations can provide communities and tree care professionals with resources and strategies to better propagate, plant and care for our urban canopies which are vital for clean air, energy conservation, water filtration and wildlife habitats.

“The STIHL Tour des Trees is our most widely recognized, high impact and important community engagement event of the year,” says TREE Fund President and CEO J. Eric Smith. “On the Tour, we meet and talk with schoolchildren, media, tree workers, homeowners, municipal leaders and thousands of folks along the road to excite and educate them about their own urban and community forests. Best of all, 100 percent of the funds raised by our riders go directly to research.”

TREE Fund has helped fund research grants totaling nearly $3.2 million since 2002. In 2016 alone, the 501(c)3 non-profit awarded a record-breaking $550,000 in new research and education grants. Recent projects and studies supported by TREE Fund have focused on:

TREE Fund not only assists with critical tree research, but it also helps fund education programs aimed at connecting young people with the environment and career opportunities in green industries. Some of the recent TREE Fund education grant recipients are:

Throughout this year’s Tour, riders will participate in tree plantings, educational programs and community engagement activities all geared towards raising awareness of the urban forest to our health and well-being and promoting the importance of continued research to support science-based tree care.
