Cyclists Prepare for 610-mile Adventure through the Carolinas to Promote Tree Health

Nearly 100 riders participate in STIHL Tour des Trees to benefit TREE Fund

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Nearly 100 riders from across the country will cycle in the 24th annual STIHL Tour des Trees cycling event Oct. 9 – 15, 2016 kicking off in Charlotte, N.C. The Tour is America’s largest fundraiser for tree research, and participants have committed to ride over 600 miles and raise $3,500 (or more) for the Tree Research & Education Endowment Fund (TREE Fund).

“We are honored to support the STIHL Tour des Trees and the admirable work of the TREE Fund,” said Roger Phelps, corporate communications manager at STIHL Inc. “The devotion and dedication that both the TREE Fund and the Tour riders show to the health of our urban canopies is inspiring and shows their commitment to the future of the tree care community.”

Cyclists come from all walks of life, but are united by their enthusiasm for trees, their sense of adventure and the friendships they share with fellow Tour riders. This year, Tour riders come from across the country with 37 riders from the Midwest, 34 riders from the South, 16 riders from the Northeast, six riders from the Pacific Northwest and four riders from Canada.

The 2016 Tour has set its sights on raising more than $300,000 for the TREE Fund, which is based in Naperville, Ill., but funds research worldwide. The Tour will traverse the Piedmont region with stops in Mt. Airy, Greensboro, Raleigh, Southern Pines, Camden, plus brief visits to surrounding communities. The journey concludes Oct. 15 in Charlotte, N.C., and over the course of the seven-day event, riders will have covered up to 610 miles.

With the help of the STIHL Tour des Trees, the TREE Fund has awarded research and education grants totaling nearly $3 million since 2002.The money raised by Tour riders has contributed to better understanding of the benefits of trees, development of hardier, drought- and disease-resistant species and improved methods for growing strong, healthy urban trees. The event also funds arboriculture education programs for children to engage and inspire the next generation of tree stewards.
