2016 STIHL Tour des Trees to cruise the Carolinas

100 cyclists with a shared passion for trees will arrive in Charlotte, NC, this October for the 2016 STIHL Tour des Trees, an annual cycling adventure benefiting the TREE Fund. The Tour des Trees, the primary community outreach and engagement event for the TREE Fund, combines great cycling, environmental education, and outreach in a weeklong celebration of urban trees. Riders visit dozens of communities where they plant trees, educate children, engage with local tree stewards and promote the mission of the TREE Fund, an international charity devoted to sustaining the world’s urban trees through research and education. This year’s Tour travels to the Carolinas for a cycling experience tailored to environmental enthusiasts, with a level of camaraderie that sets it apart from other charity fundraisers.

Full-Tour cyclists commit to raising at least $3,500 for the TREE Fund. Many raise thousands more, and return each year to reunite with friends who share their passion for cycling and trees. With funds raised by the Tour, TREE Fund researchers have discovered better ways to propagate, plant, and care for urban trees, making them more resilient, more resistant to pests, and less prone to failure. The Tour also funds education programs aimed at connecting young people with the environment and with career opportunities in the green industries. The Tour’s legacy includes a growing legion of civilian tree stewards and aspiring arborists in its host communities.

The 2016 Tour starts October 9 and ends October 15 in Charlotte, travelling nearly 600 scenic miles through North and South Carolina that week. Overnight stops include Mount Airy, Greensboro, Raleigh, Southern Pines, and Camden. A typical day includes 3-4 stops hosted by local tree stewards, tree plantings, library book donations, and a kid-friendly education program about trees presented by Professor Elwood Pricklethorn (aka Toronto arborist and veteran Tour rider Warren Hoselton). Now in its 25th year, the Tour has raised more than $6 million for tree research and has been featured in The New York Times, Forbes, Travel + Leisure, American Airlines’ in-flight magazine, the Huffington Post and CNN.

I attended the tree planting ceremony at the Sanford, NC
library in memory of Rev. Marc Sherrod. I am truly inspired with your riders and what they are able to do. Thank you for coming to our small town. Keep up the good work!
