Why are you riding the STIHL Tour des Trees?
It's been a bucket list item for me ever since supporting the tour riders back in 2003 on their last trip through NY. The biking is great and I know the people on the tour are fantastic. The timing of this year's tour coming through upstate NY is very important to many of us local arborist as we know the funds raised will be important for research on such things as Emerald Ash Borer as just recently the eighth EAB site was recently identified in NY. The research work supported by the Tree Fund is extremely important to the future of our industry. Lastly, I've never owned anything but a Stihl chainsaw - great machines!.

Trees provide more than we can ask for and they receive comparably little support and appreciation. It's exciting to raise fund to help change this and doing this by riding my bike in great company and beautiful scenery is the icing on the cake. I thouroughly enjoyed my first tour last year and am looking forward to seeing the friends I have made and experiencing every aspect of this wonderful event.

I believe in the importance of science based tree care, educated arborists and informed consumers. The funds and awareness raised through this event will benefit us and future generations. Healthy trees are rooted in research and cared for by arborists and urban foresters. Healthy trees are part of the infrastructure of healthy communities.

I am riding for my boys. They have inspired me to always reach for the stars and to achieve my goals. My biggest goal in life is to provide for them a world filled with trees so they can enjoy their beauty just as I have been privileged to do so. I have so much pride for my boys when they stop and take a moment to share their knowledge about trees with anyone who asks, and sometimes those that don't ask. I ride today so tomorrow the research can continue to make the world better for them and their children through trees.

I ride the Stihl Tour des Trees for a variety of personal and professional reasons. This is my 10th tour so there is a reason I keep coming back. My job as a utility forester depends on research, emerging and cutting edge research, so I can manage urban and community forests in our service territory for safe and reliable delivery of electricity. I am also a Trustee of the TREE Fund and I put a lot of my free time into supporting the mission of the TREE Fund. Research that helps increase our knowledge, understanding and tools to manage these forests which are in need of care. This goes far beyond the service territory.I live and work in. I also ride because it's a lot of fun. I couldn't think of a better to combine business with pleasure.

The TREE FUND is one of the few organizations (The Briton Fund is another) that raises money for tree research and the Tour des Trees is our major fundraiser of the year. Trees make the places we all live more livable and research on trees is critical toward that end. The TREE Fund's research also supports the Safe Arborist Techniques Fund which is specially dedicated to saving the lives of arborists who work on trees high above the ground. I dedicate my ride and fundraising efforts to help keep those who work on trees for a living safe. Trees make our world a better place and we must continue to find ways to help arborists stay safe while doing their life's work.

Not only are we on a quest to beautify our urban forests through research and education but we’re getting the opportunity to ride our bikes for a great cause, in a beautiful place. With that said, my name is Kendra… I speak for the trees (along with all of the other Tour riders!). After taking a 20 year break from riding, I got back on the bike last year and rode my first century in September. In November of 2012, the stars aligned and I landed a job at The Davey Tree Expert Company – a company I have been trying to get into for about a decade! I learned of the Tour des Trees after reading an article about it in the Davey Bulletin in the November/December issue. I am THRILLED that I can use my renewed love for cycling to support tree research projects and educational programs. I considered waiting one more year to do this ride, as I am still riding my circa 1986 Fuji and I won’t be able to upgrade for another year. However, after learning about this year’s ride – I decided that I could not WAIT! Therefore, I will be the rider going “old school!” No carbon fiber, no index shifting – I can’t WAIT for the experience!

People across the country are charged up by trees and we get the opportunity to bring our energy to them and their communities, places that I have never seen.
